Inositol is a water-soluble compound that is synthesized by the body from glucose. It is classified as as a vitamin-like compound which does not fully meet the classical definition of a vitamin but is nevertheless considered to belong to group B vitamins (B-8). Inositol is most abundant in nuts, beans, and grains, but its utilization is poor. It is high in breast milk and some in cow's milk. The body has a lot of inositol in nerve tissue and kidneys. It is especially needed in the nervous system, brain, kidneys, and cellular messaging.
